Not far from the city centre lies a place of magnificent peace, the final resting place for thousands of souls who had lived in Zagreb. Mirogoj cemetery is for Croatia what for France is Père Lachaise or La Recoleta for Argentina. Its stunning neorenaissance architecture and elaborately-sculpted tombs, its linden, spruce, horse chestnut and other trees that grow along main avenues, all invite for a stroll and retreat from a bustling city. Even more fascinating are the stories hidden between among those alleys and countless sculptures and tombstones.
Join me for an approximately 2hours long walk during which we will visit graves of many of those who influenced Croatia's culture and history. You will hear bizarre and funny anecdotes, tragic and poetic life accounts of some more, some less famous people who all in their way shaped the story of Zagreb.
We will meet next to the white obelisk, right in front of the main entrance to the cemetery (facing the church). After admiring 500 meters long arcades and its green copper domes, we will enter the oldest part of the cemetery and visit all its sections, from the Jewish part to some more recent graves.
I'll share tales of many of Croatian poets, musicians, actors and other artists and historical figures whose stories might bring inspiration or invite you for contemplation while you continue exploring the rest of the City of Zagreb

Hi y'all!
My name is Marija, I am a licensed tourist guide of Zagreb with experience of tour guiding around Mediterranean. I studied cultural anthropology and my biggest passion is to explore and learn about cultures and societies, but most of all to get to know personal stories and histories.
After visiting and living in different places around Europe, I came back to Zagreb, the city where I was born in and where the significant part of my life took place. My goal is to share with you all interesting stories of people and places that hide behind the beauty (and/or/of neglect) of architecture and urbanism of the city of Zagreb.

Mirogoj is the most famous Croatian cemetery that was built by the end of the 19th century by Herman Bollé, German architect who built many of Zagreb's landmarks, such as Zagreb's cathedral. The cemetery is divided into old and new part and the crematory. This tour takes you to the oldest and the most known part of the cemetery that lies behind the 500 meters long arcades.

We discovered Croatian writers and bohemians and we learned about the history of Zagreb and Croatia. The tour is very poetic and beautiful ! Marija talks mostly about Croatian artists whose stories are connected to Zagreb. So it changed as well our way to see Zagreb ! The tour was very original and exciting. Our guide was captivating, funny and she knows so much ! She gave us great advices for our visits .
