Parks & Nature

The dunes behind Birubi Beach at Anna Bay constitute the largest coastal sand mass in New South Wales and are a popular spot for activities such as quad-biking, sand-boarding and camel rides. Five minutes’ stroll away is Anna Bay village, which has a supermarket, butcher, fruit and vegetable store, bottle shop and gas station. There are takeaway shops and a popular bistro at Anna Bay Tavern. Birubi Beach, part of the 34 kilometre stretch of Stockton Bight, is completely exposed to wind and waves, but the extreme northern corner is nicely tucked away from the teeth of the summer sea breeze and it holds nice shape to about three metres.

The Fly Point - Halifax Park Aquatic Reserve was declared in January 1983. This reserve lies between Fly Point and Nelson Head, it extends from the mean high watermark to 500 metres off shore. A small area between the two jetties at Little Beach is not included in the reserve. The reserve was established for the protection of all marine plants and animals, therefore you can only observe. Within the reserve you cannot fish, destroy marine life, collect any marine organisms (whether dead or alive) and this includes empty shells. Fly Point and Halifax Park: for the one who likes to snorkel or scuba diver, these shallows reveal a rich variety of fish moving amongst the seagrass beds

Fishermans Bay foreshore in Tomaree National Park is a wonderful place for a family day out by the sea. Featuring a lovely, secluded beach, it’s a great area for swimming and snorkelling on a sunny day. If you’re there between May and October it’s a good spot to watch whales on their annual migration along the north coast. If you’re looking to go boating or kayaking for the day, you can launch your vessel from the small boat ramp here. And you’ll be able to find out more about the area at the information bay. If you’re there at low tide, you could head out on an exploration – you never know what exotic sea creatures you may see.

This easy walk on a paved track around the lower slopes of Tomaree Head brings you face-to-face with local military heritage – World War II gun emplacements, built in 1941 to defend the east coast of Australia. Learn about Fort Tomaree from interpretive signs, or take a guided Discovery tour for even more detail. A further track takes you up elevated walkways on Tomaree Head Summit walk, which offers breathtaking lookout views over Port Stephens and nature reserves like Cabbage Tree Island. Humpbacks migrate past here in winter and spring, so you’ll want to bring your camera for whale watching.

Point Stephens Lighthouse stands tall and elegant on Fingal Island with a view over the rocks of Fingal Bay. Built in 1862, Point Stephens Lighthouse features a swept tower base and first floor entrance that give a flared appearance. This construction, along with the terrace of Lighthouse Keepers’ quarters within the lighthouse precinct makes Point Stephens unique among Australian lighthouses. Point Stephens Lighthouse is even more unique, in that its location on Fingal Island is occasionally connected to the mainland. However at present, it is not possible to reach the lighthouse via the spit so it’s best to get to the island by boat and walk along the track to the lighthouse.
