Call Your Mother is the hip new spot for bagels (and they're great), but Bullfrog offers a more traditional New York-style bagel.

Newly-opened food hall just a few blocks from our spot with something (really good) for everyone. The pepperoni squares at Slice Joint, burgers at Red Apron and sushi at Ako are among our favorites. And there are great craft beers on tap at the bar and a solid cup of coffee at Cameo. Simple ordering interface on your phone (for pickup, delivery or dining in on the patio).

Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes. This is the old-fashioned diner inside historic Eastern Market, but their pancakes are the main draw (expect a bit of a line on weekends).

This is our go-to DoorDash order when we're craving Indian. They have a nice mix of standbys (i.e. chicken Tikka masala, vindaloo, etc.) and more unusual street food items that are worth a try.

DC's first huge restaurant success of the modern era, still going strong on Barrack's Row. Great for a celebration dinner or special date. Main courses tend to rotate pretty often, but you can always count on the pork sausage with coconut-chile sauce and lychees.

Hip, crowded bagel spot offering creative "Jew-ish" fare. Started by a young, Argentinian female chef, CYM fires its bagels in a brick oven and loads them up. The breakfast bagel, an egg and cheese with slabs of pastrami and a honey drizzle, packs a punch. It's a bit more manageable (and healthier?) if you get it without the meat.

Old-school Italian deli that's a hit with firefighters and other long-time Hill residents. The "G Man" is your basic Italian sub with all the fixings and probably our fave (we think it's much better fully dressed) but we have relatives who swear by the tuna salad.

H Street is a bit more of a hike from our place than Eastern Market/Barracks Row, but worth exploring especially if you're looking for inventive rice/noodle bowls and pork bao. That's what makes this hybrid restaurant/bar/hipster sneaker shop worth the (somewhat longer) walk. And don't sleep on the sneakers.

From the Hill, it's better to bike or Uber/Lyft up to Union Market, a bustling collection of restaurants, retail and food stalls that have revitalized an area that had been home only to warehouses. You can always eat your way through the market itself, which is a great way to spend a Saturday, but we love coming to St. Anselm for what is essentially an indulgent steakhouse experience without the stuffiness or banality you tend to get at The Palm or the other high-end chains downtown.

Radici is a small, Italian cafe right across from Eastern Market (so a 10-minute walk from our place). It's a perfect spot to grab an espresso and croissant or to pick up a small, pre-made sandwich to take with you (the roast beef with mushrooms is the best). They also have a nice selection of imported Italian pastas, sauces and cookies in case you're interested in stocking up and cooking at home.

So this is nowhere near our place. But we include it here because it's the one restaurant we really missed when everything was closed during the pandemic. One of Bon Appetit's top 10 restaurants a couple years back, Maydan does its meat and vegetable dishes on a wood fire in the middle of the dining room and serves everything with an assortment of delicious sauces and fresh-from-the-oven bread. It's worth planning ahead for a reservation (or setting an alert on Resy) and making the trip.
