The name Potam translates as “river” in greek due to the crisp, cold and refreshing water that is springing up from the river and underwater springs that flow all year-round. Pairs natural beauty with uniqueness to create a space that is as cool as the river that runs through it.

Pirate's cave is fairly high with circular ceiling culminating in an additional opening, similar to a chimney, from which the sunlight flows inside. The open ceiling of the cave gives the entire atmosphere a magical light. Grand entrance perfectly sculpted into shape by limestone rocks with pink color, created by layers of salt. Summer is the ideal time to visit this cave, since it is mostly accessible by boat.

SIGHTSEEING

Himara Castle hides within it the old town of Himara, a beautiful medieval fortress built on a hill. The historic old town of Himara is a cultural monument that dates back 3,500 years, when the Greek tribe of the Chaonians inhabited the area. The small town became a powerful stronghold during the middle ages and byzantine times. Several destructions and restorations occured over time and several houses and some churches were added as well. In the 8th century the castle became the center of the Bishophric of Himara. The castle was inhabited until the 16th century, when it started to be abandoned in favor of the area downhill near the Port of Himara. Since Himara became more popular among visitors, slowly more of the houses have been renovated and there are now also some nice accommodations and coffee shops with amazing views. Among the ruins of the castle are also some interesting and beautiful churches. The rocky hills on which Himara Castle is built are about 240 meters high and offer the most stunning views in all directions. Directly in front to the west you look down on Livadhi Beach and the Ionian Sea, with Corfu (greek island) and some other smaller islands on the horizon. To the south you look over another the bay and modern part of Himara. On the other sides you have spectacular views over the Visha Canyon and the Kole Midhari Canyon, with the beautiful Ceraunian Mountains in the background.

Ali Pasha’s castle of Porto Palermo is located on a small island in the Bay of Palermo, between Qeparo and Himara, around 45 kilometers from Saranda. The island is connected to the mainland by a small strip of land so you can just walk to the castle. It is claimed that Porto Palermo Castle was built in the 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Inscribed on a plague which went missing, it said “Ali Pasha of Tepelena built the castle in 1804 with the help of French military engineers” and a legend goes that says that the engineers were killed right after completion. Historics actually argue whether the castle was actually built by Ali Pasha. Some claim it has been built way earlier by the Venetians, due to its similar triangular shape with round towers, like the Venetian Triangle Castle at Butrint. In the ancient world, the bay of Porto Palermo has always been an important harbor which had to protect Himara. In Greek it was named Panormos (Panorama), and later renamed to Porto Palermo in the Byzantine era, similar to what happened to the city of Palermo in Sicily. During and after World War II the castle has been used as a prison and a shelter for military units. In 1948 Porto Palermo Castle was declared a ‘Cultural Monument’ and nowadays serves as a museum.

The fortress of Sopoti dates back to the late Bronze age. The castle was heavily damaged during the barbarian invasions of the fifth and sixth centuries A.D., and it was rebuilt in the Middle ages. In 1417 the castle was seized by the Ottomans who later restored it in the 18th century. There is no entrance fee for visiting the castle, but there are also no facilities. So make sure to make a pit stop in the village first and bring enough water, especially on hot summer days. It’s also a great idea to bring some food or snacks for a lunch break with an amazing view from the hill

TRADITIONAL VILLAGES

Vuno village situated on the hills, which ascend tο about 300 metres (980 ft), the village's name derives from the Greek word "vouno" , meaning "mountain". The village has many churches, but they are not operational as currently there are no priests in the village. The beaches of Vuno together with the ones of Himara represent the main tourist attraction of the municipality during the summer months. The beach of Jaliskari (or Jali), between Vuno and Dhërmi, has become a well-known summer resort.

There are two parts to Qeparo Village. The lower part of Qeparo has a beautiful beach and a few places to stay and relax in, if you want to be up and close to the sea. The other part of Qeparo is the old upper village and positioned on top of a mountain 300m above sea level. This old Albania village has been left behind yet the character that this place has is immense. It’s one of those places you visit where you wish and hope that it stays exactly the same, so it doesn’t lose any of its charm. The architecture, the windy cobbled paths, the ruins of once stood stone buildings are a step back in time.
